Health Career Conference March 24, 2007

Great Success! A few of the 32 speakers are featured here. Norma Duarte, Registered Nurse working for San Joaquin Valley Health Centers, a clinic in Orange Cove and alumnus of RC spoke for an interested audience, and also former RC student Joe McFarland, who is in his last year at UCSF to become a Dental Surgeon. Other speakers were Dr. Derdarian, Pharmacist in Dinuba and RC alumnus, Carrie Kron, a Registered Dental Assistant, and Karen Bailey from the Educational Department of Sierra Kings Hospital was on hand. All speakers were taking part in panels that students could question as much as they liked, and there was a workshop by former students on How to Transfer, and a cool one on Financial Support for Health Careers.

Counselor Steve Jones and Chemistry Instructor Veronica Cornel assisted tremendously to make the conference a blast. Click here

*Our students are doing very well!! Juan Fonseca is preparing to take his Pharmacy California Board Exam. Currently he is at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona in his final year. Ricardo Salas, who spoke at the conference is admitted at UCLA Medical School, and Matt Stanich started two years ago at UCSF's Med School. Joe McFarland is finishing up at the School of Dentistry of UCSF, and Sean Ky and Verock Ky both completed their Dental DDS at USC, and run a practice in Kingsburg. Former student Mark Lundgren is Doctor of Chiropraxy in Selma, Ryan Suemoto runs Pharmacy clinics in San Diego at the Naval Air Base and teaches at UCSD. Baljinder Sidhu is MD at Kaiser in Santa Clara doing his residency. Bruce Manzo is Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at UOP. For more information on our students check out ALUMNI

Family Physician Dr. Robert Fernandez and Registered Nurse Norma Duarte, a former RC student, visited the PPH Club March 24, 2006 and talked to us extensively about their jobs at San Joaquin Valley Health Centers. They took many questions and motivated our students. Robert and Norma are great role models for our students. It was a very cool talk!

Here are four great sites for you to visit depending on your major. Especially the continuous changing pre-requisites are a challenge to keep up with, but you need to do it....:

Pre-Medicine

Pre-Pharmacy

Pre-Veterinarian

Pre-Dentistry (take a peak)

We participated in Relay for Life in 2006, and in 2007 and we will participate for a third time in 2008. Contact Mandeep Sanghera. We had a great first and second fund raiser on Kaleidoscope Day, and  very successful canned food drives.

JOB SHADOWING: Gabriel Torres job-shadowed with a Doctor in Sanger, Alex Aceves with a Medical Clinic in Dinuba, Chris Cardoza is with Longs Drugs' Pharmacy in Fresno, and Danielle Lee not only assisted in New Orleans in January, but was our main driving force behind our first Relay for Life. Danielle received the UC Regent's $5,000 scholarship! Ryan Froese assisted Physician Assistant Brad Arnsberger in Orange Cove. Josh Grant worked with EMT's in Tulare. Anna Kazaryan made it into Stanford University's reputed 8-week pre-med program this Summer, and also obtained a very nice $2,000 scholarship! Advice: Apply for job shadowing during, Easter, the Summer, Thanksgiving or Christmas Break! Use the hospital web sites.

RECYCLING PROGRAM: In September 2006 we started to re-organize on the RC campus RECYCLING of Aluminum Cans, Plastic Bottles, Batteries, and Aerosol Cans. After all, recycling is a health related issue. We are placing blue bins everywhere on campus, they have a nice PPH Recycling label on it, thanks to Franky Mesa, and with the help of Jason Meyers and building manager Jim Burgess' crew we are doing our best to keep the area's clean. Sabrina Jules and Mandeep Sanghera are the driving forces, the program is growing, and they need help now. Please, contact Mr. Dekker. Read the Mission Statement of our Recycling Program, and more info on it in the PPH-Minutes of this semester.

Club Rush on the Reedley campus took place in September. Volunteers gave info on our club, we signed up some new members, and we made $50 for the club.

Dr. Robert Urtecho, the former Dean of our Department talked to a large group of teens at a conference in Visalia in September, and he donated his honorarium for the speech to our club, which was a cool one-and three-zero's fee! We will use the money to sign up for the next Relay for Life and to organize our Second Reedley College Health Career Conference in March 2008. Read on in the minutes of our meetings:
